What do you think about President Obama's change in nuclear strategy?
(published 12-Apr-2010, Appleton Post-Crescent)
What doesn't change is the huge committment of U.S. forces to defend other countries. Thanks to us, the whole of Europe, practically speaking, has been able to enjoy a much slower economic decline – complete with universal health care – because they haven't had to spend money on their own defense. The President's goal of "a world without nuclear weapons" is built upon the hard work done by Ronald Reagan. Don't forget that the Soviet Union panicked over Reagan's insistence on building a "Star Wars" missile shield. They couldn't figure out why he offered to share it with them either. If you want to see what real nuclear arms reduction negotiations look like, read Reagan's Secret War published last summer. The arms reduction treaty signed on June 1st, 1988, ended the "Cold War". President Obama's initiative is decent but he can only dream that he'll be as successful as Reagan.
[This long series of "Recent Commentary" posts is from the Appleton Post-Crescent weekly Reader Reaction Forum feature. Each submission can be no longer than 150 words. That explains some of the terseness of expression and cramming to fit. - Ed.]
